And especially for those brave people who cling to their lives and fight tirelessly to overcome Breast Cancer. According to the World Health Organization, it is estimated that 266,120 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer this year in the United States and 63,960 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in situ. Also, it is estimated that in the United States, approximately 2,550 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer. In Costa Rica, 43 out of 100,000 women suffer from breast cancer. Our LS Dental Clinic family sympathizes with these brave fighters and we have set to work, wanting to contribute our bit in this fight.

Many people do not know yet, but breast cancer has an impact on oral health. The care of the teeth and the mouth during the treatment against cancer is key to improve the quality of life of the patient and then avoid rigorous complications.

The National Cancer Institute, in the United States, recommends a series of good oral practices prior to cancer treatments such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy on a larger scale, since these treatments can significantly affect the patient’s teeth, gums and teeth. This is to avoid affecting the patient’s diet, and to improve the quality of life during and after cancer treatment.

Among side effects in the oral health of cancer treatments are cavities, infections, gum pain or gingivitis, sores in the mouth, peeling of the tongue and taste alteration. For this reason, it is very important to discover in a timely manner any evidence that might suggest a potential oral complication.

How to prevent and treat side effects to the oral health of cancer treatments?

Undoubtedly it is a matter of prevention and follow-up with your dentist. Some recommendations are:

 1. A complete examination of the mouth and teeth before starting radiotherapy or chemotherapy.
 2. A recurring professional dental cleaning (your dentist will recommend the frequency).
 3. Caries treatment and restoration of the necessary parts.
 4. Treatment of periodontal disease.
 5. Periodic controls during cancer treatment (cancer).
 6. Monitoring of possible warning signs of complications: swelling and / or bleeding gums, numbness of the jaw, gum pain.

As for the oral hygiene of the patient with cancer would be the same instructions as the rest of the population, however, in these should be comprehensive and rigorous.

Some extra recommendations that you can consider are:

 • Use a brush with soft nylon filaments.
 • Make sure to clean your gums well.
 • If your gums are very sensitive and fragile, rinse the toothbrush in hot water every 15 to 30 seconds in the brushing to soften it and avoid cuts or damage to the gums.
 • Rinse with water or saline 3 or 4 strokes during brushing to remove plaque that may come loose during brushing.
 • Choose a toothpaste with neutral flavor.
 • Let your toothbrush dry in the air.
 • Change your toothbrush every 3 months or less.
 • Gently use dental floss.
 • Whenever dentures are used, clean them with a special brush and rinse thoroughly after each meal.
 • If your gums hurt or bleed during brushing or flossing, consult the dentist.
 • Keep your mouth and lips hydrated and moist.
 • Ask your dentist if you have questions about how to care for your oral hygiene correctly.

The fundamental thing is that the patient can recover from the disease while maintaining the best quality of life possible. At LS Dental Clinic your treatment and recovery are our highest priority. Our team of doctors and specialists are at your entire disposal.

Glo Dental Whitening https://lsdentalcostarica.com/about-dental-whitening/ Thu, 01 Feb 2018 21:26:29 +0000 http://www.lsdentalcostarica.com/?p=2040 […]]]> It is a fact that people smile more when they know their smile reveals a mouth full of white teeth and healthy gums. It instils confidence and assists in positive daily interactions with friends, colleagues, acquaintances and family. On the other hand, discoloured and misaligned teeth discourage people from smiling and give a negative impression when meeting and communicating with others. Dental whitening can help solve this problem.

Dental whitening is a simple, affordable and effective procedure which whitens teeth painlessly. The end result is a sparkling white smile which is an instant confidence booster.

At LS Dental we believe your smile and wellbeing are very important. That is why we offer you Glo Whitening System. A cutting edge non-invasive procedure designed to give you a bright smile in a fast, effective and convenient way. This system is designed to remove stains and whiten your teeth, while the effects are long lasting . This Whitening system is a very simple procedure that is highly recommended to keep those pearly whites white and keep your smile bright.

Why do teeth become discoloured?

There are many reasons why our teeth discolour as we age. These can be divided into internal and external factors. With regard to external factors, coffee, tea and red wine are some of the major culprits. The tar and nicotine in tobacco cause teeth to yellow with time.

Internal discolouration problems include the natural process of aging, where the enamel on the outside of the tooth wears thin over time and the yellowish dentine inside the tooth begins to show through. A blow to the mouth may also cause discolouration as the body naturally produces more dentine to protect the tooth. Another factor which causes tooth discolouration is certain medications, such as antibiotics (tetracycline in particular), antipsychotics, some antihistamines and high blood pressure tablets.

It’s important to have a dental exam before embarking on dental whitening to ensure there are no contraindications so the best results are obtained. Patients should be over the age of 18 before having dental whitening and have paid a visit to the dental hygienist for a full dental cleaning. It is important to always maintain good oral hygiene to keep the teeth white and the gums healthy.

Dental whitening is not recommended for patients with periodontal disease, severe fluorosis, highly sensitive teeth or for pregnant or lactating women. Patients may experience some sensitivity after dental whitening but this is temporary.

8 things you should know before getting a Root Canal Treatment https://lsdentalcostarica.com/8-things-you-should-know-before-getting-root-canal-treatment/ Mon, 20 Nov 2017 16:21:17 +0000 http://www.lsdentalcostarica.com/?p=4656 […]]]> Before doing any dental procedure in Costa Rica, it is very important and necessary to clarify all your questions. We show you these 8 things that you will surely need to know before getting a Root Canal Treatment:

What is a Root Canal Treatment?

A root canal treatment is a dental work process that consists of three steps. The first, is to extract the pulp (set of vessels and nerves enclosed) from the inside of the tooth by small files. After this, the internal layer of the tooth is disinfected with special liquids. Later, the roots of the tooth are filled inside with a plastic material so that bacteria can’t survive, and thus the reinfection of the tooth is avoided.

In which cases is it carried out?

A root canal treatment is a dental work process that needs to be done in case the tooth can’t be extracted normally, or if the tooth has been affected so deep that decay has already touched the pulp of the tooth.

What are the benefits of getting a root canal treatment?

In addition to the elimination of continuous tooth pain, a root canal treatment will allow you to keep your tooth and not lose a valuable dental piece. In most cases the loss of a tooth may cause more problems as discomfort on the teeth nearby.

Does the affected tooth get darker?

The darkening of a tooth can appear as a consequence of the internal bleeding of the pulp. This can happen because of the decomposition of the pulp from an old cavity, or a an previous direct impact to the tooth. However, these situations occur before the Root Canal Treatment, and not because of it.

What are the Causes of nerve damage?

The most frequent causes for nerve damage are deep cavities. However, there are other reasons such as impacts on the teeth, wear by bruxism, chewing of objects or hard foods that can cause fissures in the tooth. Fissures in the tooth most of the time allow the passing of bacteria towards the inside of the tooth, as well as periodontal disease (pyorrhea).

What happens if I wait too long to get treatment?

If the root canal treatment isn’t performed in a timely manner, both the cavity and the infection can reach the bone and infect it as well as the lymph nodes. If you feel dental pain or discomfort, you should contact us as soon as possible to schedule you dental treatment.

Should I take special precautions after the root canal treatment?

The root canal treatment by itself prevents other major dental problems, such as as infections in the bone or the gum. However, you should understand that after the treatment, your tooth has lost an important amount of sensitivity. Because of this, you might not feel pain by cavities, and therefore may not notice them. This is the main reason why you should keep an excellent dental hygiene and schedule regular visits to your dentist.

Does the root canal treatment cause a lot of pain?

The root canal treatment eliminates the pain that you feel in your affected tooth. After the treatment, the pain in the dental piece can occur for a day or two after the intervention, when chewing. After 3 days you should feel no pain whatsoever.

]]> 4656 5 reasons to get your dental work during Costa Rica’s sunny season https://lsdentalcostarica.com/5-reasons-to-get-your-dental-work-during-costa-ricas-sunny-season/ Fri, 17 Nov 2017 21:50:02 +0000 http://www.lsdentalcostarica.com/?p=4630 […]]]> Visiting Costa Rica is one of those things you definitely have to do in a lifetime. It’s important for you to consider that we are a tropical country, and most of the time our weather is humid, so the rains can in some way, affect the activities you probably have thought of doing.

At LS Dental Clinic, we want you to have the time of your life, so we leave you these 5 reasons why visiting our country during the dry season can be much more fun.

Volcanoes

To get the best view of the craters of our volcanoes, clear skies are a must. Clear skies occur when the clouds are not full of water, which happens mostly during the dry season.

Regional and folklore activities

Most of the typical activities in Guanacaste, and other regions of our country are carried out in the last and first days of the year coinciding with the sunny period and with the vacations of the majority of ticos.

Guanacaste Beaches

You will fall in love with the magical and unique sunsets that are seen in Guanacaste Beaches, they look so much better during the sunny season. Coco Beach, the paradise where LS Dental Clinic is located, offers you some of the most marvelous sunsets you’ll ever witness. We’re sure you won’t regret walking on the warm sand while watching this natural spectacle.

Mountain trails

If you prefer the mountain, our wonderful national parks located in Guanacaste offer you a wide variety of hiking and walking trails for activities such as birdwatching and camping. During sunny season you’ll be able to access more walking trails and waterfalls that, for security reasons remain closed during the rainy season.

Birth of Baula turtles

If you are a lover of wildlife, you’ll be interested in the spawning of Baula Turtle. The peak of this spawning happens from December to January, and continues until mid February. These turtles can be watched in Playa Grande, which is located in the National Park Marino Las Baulas in Guanacaste.

]]> 4630 How Dental Veneers can help you get a beautiful smile https://lsdentalcostarica.com/dental-veneers-digital-smile-design-costa-rica/ Thu, 16 Nov 2017 04:28:13 +0000 http://www.lsdentalcostarica.com/?p=4417 […]]]> Before beginning to talk about this treatment, it is extremely important to highlight the difference between dental veneers and covers or crowns. The difference lies basically in its form and its application since while the veneers are merely aesthetic and only adhere to the front of the tooth, on the other hand the crown or sheath envelops the entire dental piece, so in some cases the sides of the natural tooth must be worn slightly so that the sheath will fit perfectly.

Patients tend to confuse these terms and it is necessary to know the specifications of each of them since each case of patients should be analyzed to carry out the treatment that best suits their needs

Dental veneers are thin but sturdy prostheses made of porcelain that adhere with special adhesives to the anterior surface of the teeth, making the finish look natural and proportional. These are used in cases of fractured, stained, misaligned, worn, unequal or with abnormal separation, whether it has occurred naturally or by accident.

The veneers can be made of two materials: the resin and the porcelain. In the case of LS Dental we have dental technicians who design the shape of the tooth with specialized equipment after the patient’s smile is scanned, after which our Sirona machine is in charge of carving the shape of the missing piece, then cementing it with resinous products to the dental surface.

Porcelain veneers have great benefits for the patient as being compatible with the organism, the patient’s natural tooth has less wear and tear on the veneer, they are highly resistant to fractures and over time. Because of the composition of the porcelain and the sealant applied to it, it does not absorb fluids and therefore does not discolour or stain with the foods consumed. It is fair to say that on all these benefits is the happiness and self-esteem of each patient to show a new radiant smile.

At LS Dental we smile when we see you smile, we have many cases of success in which our patients are extremely satisfied with the result

What is Implantology and Dental Implants? https://lsdentalcostarica.com/what-is-implantology-dental-implants-costa-rica/ Mon, 09 Oct 2017 04:31:10 +0000 http://www.lsdentalcostarica.com/?p=4416 […]]]> Implantology is the area of dentistry that is responsible for the study and placement of alloplastic materials (non-organic objects specially created to be implanted inside our body) used inside or over the jaws, in order to replace missing teeth and give support a dental rehabilitation, returning a complete smile to the patient being both a physical and a medical benefit.

A dental implant is a fixed prosthesis to which the dentist will later cement a crown or a bridge depending on each case. The dental implant is only the object inserted surgically in the jaw, the visible part in the form of a dental piece is the crown or the bridge.

The crown is a single dental piece used to cover an implant or a damaged tooth. The bridge instead, is made up from multiple pieces that fill a remaining space, and it works by cementing the resin between the two natural teeth, or between the implants.

It is important to note that not all implants are the same and the cost of each treatment varies depending on the type of implant. This will depend on the doctor’s diagnosis and the patient’s needs.

Usually local anesthesia is used for these procedures, as they are ambulatory, but other forms of sedation such as nitrous oxide and oral and / or intravenous sedation may be used). Implants are a staggered process, that is to say that it consists of several faces which are given gradually.

It consists of three stages: The first consists of inserting the implant into the bone, replacing the root of the tooth, which remains below the gingiva to protect the implant during healing.

The second stage is placed a pillar, which is the connection between the implant inside the gingiva and the outside towards the mouth. The gingiva is allowed to heal around the abutment so that in the third stage, place the crown in the shape of the missing tooth.

How I saved $25.000 on dental work https://lsdentalcostarica.com/dental-work-savings-cost-prices-costa-rica/ Mon, 09 Oct 2017 04:30:33 +0000 http://www.lsdentalcostarica.com/?p=4418 […]]]> I first met Dr. Ricardo Lopez as a walk-in patient for a routine cleaning. I was impressed with the tidy & quiet atmosphere in the reception area. One of the first things I noticed in the treatment rooms was the autoclave! Everything around me was so spotlessly clean!

Dr. Lopez shook my hand, introduced himself, smiling, before putting on his new black surgical gloves.
I was nervous (& shaking) but he talked calmly as he proceeded. It was the quickest & least painful cleaning I had ever experienced! He also replaced a filling & x rayed my teeth…and all for a fraction of the cost in Canada!

I had a problem with grinding my teeth at night. My front teeth were almost transparent & pieces were breaking off constantly. was unable to bite or chew my food without cutting it into tiny pieces. I couldn’t even bite a piece of toast.
Dr. Lopez recommended crowns on all of my upper teeth to maintain an even & healthy bite.

Over several visits, he personally photographed my teeth & bite, took multiple molds & proceeded to rebuild my front teeth to strengthen them. He applied temporary crowns so that my TMJ would adjust slowly to the changes before applying the permanent ceramic crowns. He also prepared a lower mouth guard for me to wear at night. Not only did he perform all of these tasks on me personally, at times a second dentist assisted!

Dr. Lopez was always professional, gentle & patient. He was always available to answer all of my questions and concerns even outside of office hours. He made me feel comfortable and even made me laugh on several occasions. I felt more like a friend at times than just a client.

The result is overwhelming! I am able to enjoy eating all my favorite food again…. and I smile a lot! Everyone notices the difference and I tell them all my story.

I highly recommend Dr. Lopez & the LS Dental Clinic. This has been an more affordable & pleasurable process than I could ever have expected compared to my past experiences in Canada.

The treatment I got is called Full upper arch rehabilitation, which included veneers and dental crowns. The goal was to lift the dimension of my teeth, which had been damaged due to the grinding, otherwise known as bruxism. This treatment would have cost me around $36.000 in Canada or the US. In Costa Rica, it cost me $5.600. In tickets, transportation, food, lodging, and entertainment I spent around $2.000, without mentioning I stayed for a nice 10 day vacation in paradise, watching beautiful birds and monkeys.

16 Questions you should ask before getting dental implants and dental Work in Costa Rica https://lsdentalcostarica.com/faq-common-questions-dental-implants-work-costa-rica/ Mon, 09 Oct 2017 04:28:23 +0000 http://www.lsdentalcostarica.com/?p=4415 […]]]> Probably if you are going to pay for a dental treatment you have many doubts that you want to clarify before, that is why we present the 16 most common questions of our patients and the answers.

1. Are dental implants painful?
The treatment is a surgery and this carries at least one incision in the gingiva, bone and installation of a prosthesis in the tooth bone, as well as inflammation and general pain in the area. While all this occurs under the effect of anesthesia, the subject of pain is something very subjective of each person. At LS Dental we have the highest levels of hygiene and professionalism when performing our surgeries, minimizing the risk of infection, thus achieving a recovery in less time and less painful.

2. How is the recovery?
The post-surgery recovery process is quite simple, we recommend absolute rest for 2 days as well as a cold liquid diet and constant ice applications in the area. Antibiotics and medications are provided to prevent any infection and to heal the wound in the shortest possible time, it is important to avoid physical exertion and to be exposed to high temperatures as this could cause additional bleeding that delays the healing process. The seams break off on their own and the patient within 7 days can return to normal life, always taking into consideration that the wound should be especially careful.

3. What activities can I do during and after my dental treatment?
During the post-surgery recovery process, it is recommended to follow the instructions given by the doctor, once the wound heals effectively the patient can lead a completely normal life.

4. Can I get an estimate of my dental implants cost before I travel?
Of course, this will have a chance of being fulfilled by 90% when presenting radiographs before the visit and around 75% when the budget is based on a conversation or conventional photos.

5. How expensive are Costa Rica dental implant prices?
The price of the implant will vary due to three functions. Implant brand and the warranty it provides, the type of treatment required as well as additional and the additional each professional adds to cover their expenses. In the case of Costa Rica, the expenses of the professional are lower than those of other countries without sacrificing the technical knowledge and experience of the professional.

6. In which cases is it advisable to do a dental implant procedure?
Whenever a nerve is involved or a tooth is lost, especially in young patients because the loss of bone in the mouth is an irreversible situation that will cause greater damage in the long term.

7. Do implants look natural?
The dental implant per se is not visible, so it does not have a problem of being artificial. The dental implant is hidden inside the gum and should not be exposed under any circumstances. In case of gum problems, additional graft treatment will be required to control this issue and protect oral health in general. The visible part of the implant is the crown that is fastened on this and the look of this will vary depending on the material and the condition of this (deteriorated crowns have to look unnatural). However it takes a very critical eye to notice the difference between natural crowns and teeth

8. What materials are used to create them?
The implants are mainly made of titanium, for the strength of the material as well as their anti rust conditions (look for fixed Wikipedia are more technical but that’s basically it)

9. Is Tobacco a problem after placing Dental Implants?
As a health clinic our first recommendation for any patient is to avoid smoking, however we respect the decisions of our patients. In the particular case of the implant, smoking will only impair the wound healing process after surgery, once the wound is healthy the cigarette will not deteriorate in any way the implant even if it will stain the patient’s teeth .

10. Are there foods that shouldn’t be consumed or that affect the implanted piece?
Only during the post-surgery recovery process will indications of a cold liquid diet be made, however it is important to clarify that this is merely by wound healing and not by the implant itself. It is demonstrated that the dental implant functions even better than the root of a natural tooth given its composition.

11. Does diabetes, hypertension or heart problems represent an impediment to
placement of implants? What diseases put this procedure at risk?
Like all surgery and due to anesthesia and blood loss, many diseases can present a risk to the patient. However 99% of these have solution and can be given the surgery. At LS Dental, the health of our patients is always our priority and in no situation will we perform a treatment without our patient being satisfied with the risk that it entails.

12. If I have an orthodontic treatment, is that a problem for an implant, or viceversa?
Since the braces move the position of the teeth and the root of these, it is advisable to wait for the treatment to finish before putting an implant. Since the crown is tailor-made for each patient, we have no problem adapting the restoration to the needs of the client

13. How long should I wait without being able to use the prosthesis?
It will depend on the healing of the wound and the evolution of the case, however once the patient returns to his country, he will take with him the prosthesis and the indications to use it, in LS Dental we work to make our treatments in the least possible way invasive in the personal life of our patients.

14. What special hygiene care should I have after this procedure?
During the post-surgery recovery process, the patient will have special care measures to decrease the healing process. Once this is completed, the patient can carry a normal hygiene in his mouth.

15. How long does it take to get dental implants?
Generally dental implants take two visits to Costa Rica, the first of approximately 5 days for implant placement and the second approximately 8 days for restoration of the implant. It should be taken into account that between both visits a period of 4 to 6 months is needed for the healing of the implant. These conditions represent 85% of the cases however they can vary depending on the conditions of each case. Contact us for more information

16. Why 2 visits?
The 2-stage implants have academic studies as well as proven experience that last a lifetime. In cases with optimal conditions of bone can be performed what is called an instant load, in this case the crown is installed a few days after implant surgery however it is not recommended given that the pressure generated by the bite can cause an implant to fail. Several dentists use the mini implants that are immediately loaded but they do not have studies that last a lifetime and according to observed data have a higher percentage of failure.

Closeness to airport / easy access to clinic

In order take full advantage of the time you spend in Costa Rica, considering how long it takes you to get to the clinic, hotel and back to the airport is very important. It is important that these distances are not very far from each other.
