Periodontal disease, more commonly known as gum disease, has a negative effect on your oral health and can knock your confidence. Some of the problems periodontal disease causes is persistent bad breath and rotting teeth.

The early stages of gum disease are called gingivitis which is a swelling of the gums. Consult your orthodontist straight away. If left untreated gingivitis can lead to periodontal disease.

Periodontitis causes the inner layer of the gums to pull away from the teeth. This makes your teeth look longer and leaves holes that collect food and mucus which turns into plaque.

Although the body’s immune system fights the bacteria caused by oral debris, the toxins in plaque is difficult to break down when lodged in holes between the gums and teeth.

If you notice any of the systems listed below, you should consult your orthodontist to avoid gum disease:

• Bleeding gums
• Swollen gums that turn bright red or purplish and tender to the touch
• Bad breath
• Bad taste in your mouth
• Loose teeth
• Spaces between gums that make your teeth look longer

What causes periodontal gum disease?

Our mouths are full of bacteria that manifests as plaque on the teeth. When plaque is not removed by brushing and flossing it hardens and forms tartar. Tartar can only be removed with dental tools.

If you develop a build-up of tartar it weakens the gums. The bacteria can then infect your mouth with gingivitis and afterwards, periodontitis. The early signs of gingivitis are bleeding gums when you brush or floss. You may also notice irritation on your gum line.

Although these early symptoms can be caused by heavy brushing or sensitive gums, they can lead to worse problems. Healthy gums are firm and pale pink. If your gums are red or purplish, see your dentist right away.
